Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda/ One Fair Wage in Saugatuck, Michigan
There are many wonderful things about living and photographing in Saugatuck/Douglas, Michigan. Visitors often comment on the natural beauty of the lakeshore, art, shopping, and fine foods. One of my favorite things I experience as a local, is sharing in community. We all share in this journey in the busy seasons and in the slow seasons. We share in our struggles and successes. We support each other. Yes, I was honored to have had this moment to photograph Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. I am thankful. There is another awesome part of this day. The connection to community that I experienced. Let me explain....
My friend Kim Heiser (from The Kirby http://thekirbyhotel.com/) was scheduled to photograph this event but contacted me Saturday morning because her camera, lenses, and laptop were stolen. During the rush of it all she fell down the stairs and broke her arm. This all happened a few hours before she was to arrive and photograph this special event. Kim asked if I could cover for her. I said absolutely. Then, Kim shared with me that I would be photographing a private event with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. My task was to photograph portraits of Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda with each guest. Jaw drop! "Oh, and you have to arrive in 30 mins." Jaw drop again! Kim continued to thank me but I was the one feeling thankful for this opportunity.
When I arrived, I was greeted by a new friends, Shelly Padnos and Carol Sarosik. I instantly felt welcomed and peaceful. My goodness, in the last moments of everyone preparing for the event she took time to share her personal photography collection. This deeply affected me. I was reminded of the value of photography as art. Christine Ferris from Farmhouse Deli http://www.thefarmhousedeli.com/ was preparing the amazing food. Mindy from The Kirby was getting the bar ready. We have an appreciation of each other's gifts and talents. We love working together and serving our community. I LOVE this about our lives together here. I loved this about that day.
Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda were here in support of the One Fair Wage Campaign. This event was a private event to raise funding in support of raising minimum wage. I was blessed to meet many wonderful people, photograph Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, and learn more about this campaign. I was thinking about how these two women could just write a check and go relax someplace but instead they are working tirelessly to help this important cause. Bless them both! I also admired the people in the room that are social activists in our community and use their finances and passions to make this world a better place for everyone.
